BDO Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank. A non-stock, non-profit organization founded in 2008, the foundation implements initiatives to address the needs of underserved sectors of society. It serves as the channel for BDO’s outreach activities.

An active member of the NGO community, BDO Foundation is duly accredited by the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and Philippine Council for NGO Certification. It is a member of the Association of Foundations and League of Corporate Foundations.

Accreditation from the aforementioned agencies affirms the foundation’s status as an organization that meets standards of good governance, program relevance, effectiveness, sound financial management, credibility, transparency and accountability. Its membership in associations paves the way for effective collaboration between the foundation, donors and government institutions.

BDO Foundation’s advocacies are disaster response, which include rehabilitation and rebuilding; and financial inclusion.

Disaster response

In line with its disaster response advocacy and in the spirit of bayanihan, BDO Foundation mounts relief operations in areas affected by natural disasters or armed conflict. The foundation provides aid in provinces placed under a state of calamity with the support of employees from BDO and BDO Network Bank branches all over the country.

BDO volunteers visit evacuation sites to distribute hygiene kits or relief packs containing food, rice and drinking water to affected families. Through the relief operations, BDO officers and staff make a difference in calamity-stricken communities by helping fellow Filipinos in their time of need. In areas inaccessible to employees, BDO Foundation’s partners—non-governmental organizations, local government units, church groups, the military and concerned citizens—help distribute relief goods.

Rehabilitation and rebuilding

BDO Foundation rehabilitates rural health units in economically disadvantaged and disaster-affected areas across the country. The initiative helps improve the healthcare delivery system in the country, one of the goals under the Philippine Health Agenda. It also contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 3 to ensure healthy lives and promote the well-being of all people at all ages.

Supported by BDO and BDO Network Bank branches as well as local government units, BDO Foundation renovates the health centers’ layout, interiors and exteriors, lobbies and waiting areas, consultation and treatment rooms, offices, clinics, facilities, furniture and fixtures. The foundation also builds breastfeeding stations for nursing mothers, play areas for children and waiting lounges for senior citizens.

These improvements enable health workers to provide primary and maternal healthcare services more efficiently to their constituents. The rehabilitation also helps rural health units get good assessment scores from the Department of Health and accreditation from PhilHealth. Ultimately, the initiative helps improve the health and well-being of Filipinos.

As part of its rebuilding programs, BDO Foundation constructs school buildings in areas affected by natural disasters or armed conflict. The initiative supports the Department of Education’s Adopt-a-School program and efforts to address the need for more classrooms in the country. Responding to the need for environments conducive to learning, the foundation constructs classrooms complete with blackboards, electric fans, desks for teachers and chairs for students.

The foundation also constructs technical-vocational training facilities, which contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 8 to promote sustained economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Through the initiative, BDO Foundation helps educate disadvantaged and out-of-school youth, capacitate students, and make them employable in the Philippines and abroad.

Financial inclusion

As part of a shared advocacy to promote financial inclusion, BDO Foundation implements financial education programs in partnership with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Education, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Civil Service Commission, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Philippine National Police.

The programs benefit public school students, teachers and non-teaching personnel; overseas Filipino workers and recipients of remittances; government workers; uniformed and civilian personnel of the armed forces; fisherfolk; firefighters; and police personnel. Through the initiative, the partners share lessons on such topics as saving, budgeting and financial planning, investments, debt management, the responsible use of credit, entrepreneurship, avoiding scams and retirement planning with the target audience.

The partnership projects aim to achieve the following objectives:

* Support BSP’s National Strategy for Financial Inclusion

* Integrate financial literacy concepts into the K to 12 curriculum and the training for teachers and non-teaching personnel of DepEd

* Strengthen the financial literacy component of OWWA’s training programs for OFWs and their families

* Strengthen the financial literacy initiatives of other partner government agencies

* Institutionalize financial education in the capacity building programs of partner government agencies

* Equip beneficiaries with the tools, knowledge and resources to make sound financial decisions

* Raise the country’s financial literacy levels

As part of the programs, the foundation and its partners embarked on the following:

* Development of training modules, lesson plans and discussion guides

* Training of trainers

* Production of financial education videos

By sharing lessons on financial responsibility with Filipinos, BDO Foundation promotes financial inclusion, contributes to the development of a financially literate citizenry and supports nation-building.

Through its relief operations, rehabilitation program, construction of school buildings and financial education programs, BDO Foundation is finding ways to serve Filipinos.
